Chateau
Saint Estéve de Neri is a an independent wine producer
in the Appellation of Cotes du Luberon. The property is situated
on the south flank of the Luberon range of mountains, about
25 km north of Aix en Provence. It enjoys a temperate Mediterranean
climate, without the extreme cold of a continental climate
in the winter and in the summer it is dry with light breezes
relieving the heat. The average rainfall is just over 600
mm and is distributed evenly through the year. The Luberon
has in the order of 2600 hours of sunshine per annum, one
of the sunniest areas of France.
The
terroir is essentially Eocene red clay and sand
covered with rough limestone rocks and pebbles. It is within
the Pays dAigues sector of the Luberon geological
system and there is good subterranean water because of the
limestone. Pays dAigues means country of water.
Since
taking over the property our farming philosophy has been
to eliminate the use of herbicides and pesticides and keep
interventions to a prudent minimum. We practice a vendange
vert selectively in the vineyard to manage yields
and fruit concentration.
The
grape varieties of the Luberon are traditional Rhone varieties,
including grenache noir, syrah, carignan, grenache blanc
and ugni blanc.
